The Youth Athlete
Ideal for Recreation Departments or school Athletic Directors
More and more research is showing that sports conditioning methods: plyometrics, core
training, strength, flexibility is hugely benefiting youth athletes, and decreasing rate
of injuries. Unfortunately, with educational systems being overwhelmed with meeting
budgets they often lack the resources needed to catch up with this recent knowledge. While
youth sports would be at a loss with out volunteer coaches, training methods have changed
and the lack of knowledge is impeding the athlete and possibly putting at risk for injury.
From the American Sports Medicine College:
In many cases the musculoskeletal system of children and adolescents who enter sports
programs may not be prepared to handle the duration and magnitude of force that develops
during practice and game situations. While improper footwear, hard playing surfaces, poor
nutrition and muscle imbalances are recognized risk factors for sports-related injuries,
the back- ground level of physical activity should also be considered. In short, a
youngsters participation in sports should not start with competition, but should
evolve out of preparatory conditioning that includes strength, aerobic, and flexibility
training.
